The divorce rate in the United States is high, with estimates anywhere from 40% to 60%. However, divorce rates are even higher for those who cohabitate before marriage. About 40% of cohabitants break up before getting married. But of those who do get married, the divorce rate is nearly 50% higher for cohabitants than for non-cohabitants. The evidence seems to show that living together before marriage increases the risk of divorce.

- or blame - for some of the statistics, affecting both the remarriage and divorce rate.
- 58 percent of women and 54 percent of men had married only once in their lives.
- On average, first marriages that end in divorce last about eight years.
- Among adults 25 and older who had ever divorced, 52 percent of men and
44 percent of women were currently married.
- 12 percent of men and 13 percent of women had married twice, and 3 percent of each had been married three or more times.
- Just over half of married women in 2004 had been married for at least
15 years; 6 percent had made it to the half-century mark.
