Oh my Soul!

I don't know about you, you might wake up every morning and feel like singing like a songbird. I don't. Okay, anyone who knows me probably thinks I do, and I do a lot. But not always. Sometimes I have to lead my heart to worship.

The Psalm writers frequently said "praise the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord," or "bless the Lord, o my soul." Who were they writing that to? They weren't writing to me, and they weren't writing to the Lord. They were writing to their own souls for cryin' out loud. That seems to say that we have authority over our hearts, we have authority over our souls. Maybe the songwriter woke up that morning and didn't feel like praising God. But he stepped into, and stepped under the understanding, that's what he's made for, and that's what we're made for--to praise the Lord. So we can say to our soul, "since you have to listen to me, praise the Lord today."

If life's going perfect, plan A is going great--praise the Lord. Hey soul, praise the Lord today. If life isn't so perfect, or it's falling apart around you, you're on plan R and it's not workin' out. You don't know if you can hold on for another day... hey soul, praise the Lord. This thing we call worship is about God--it's not about our circumstances. It's about the fact that God is great, God is grand, and He's always good. He always has a plan. It's a perfect plan from a perfect father. And he calls you and me His beloved.

1 Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103
